Everyone of us is creative

Henry Veldkamp

You might not know this about Henry but he's a pretty creative guy. As his retirement day approached, he got the idea to leave a little memento with the people he's worked with over the years. It turns out that 30+ years in the carpet industry means you've gotten to know a lot of people . . . 130 to be exact!

He started looking around for something to give that wouldn't break the bank. Naturally, as someone who doesn't even know how to turn on a computer, he turned to me first. "Hey can you search on Google (we've finally managed to convince him it's not 'The Google) and see what kind of promo things are out there? I want something a little different, something they can remember me by."

And so the search began . . . Pen? Boring. Mug? Even more boring. Bottle opener? Who opens bottles these days?? T shirt?? (I was getting desperate) Too complicated and over budget. "I don't know dear, I think you may want to stick to a pen or a mug."

He then went over my head and got Morgan to look online for him . . . Same result . . .

Next stop, visit a local company that makes promotional materials. They had a long chat Henry and the salesman, and in the end the salesman told him he couldn't make anything close to what he had in mind for a reasonable price. (he had an idea, he knew what he wanted to say)

What to do, what to do.

He did what we all do in this situation. He visited the Dollar Store! Perusing through the isles he saw it . . . the perfect thing to bring his vision to life.

A wooden casket.

Luckily for us there are lots of dollar stores in the area. We visited them all and wiped out their casket supply.

He has a friend in the printing business and she made up his labels. I sat down one evening and painted the first casket . . .

And then our differences became very apparent . . . I was ready to hand paint 130 caskets . . . he had a much better (and more efficient) idea . . .

And what did he do with all those black caskets?

Creative right???

I just love it when he gives his creativity free reign.

I can't wait to see what else he comes up with now that he's retired!
